Sabbatical Presentation – Diane Luchese, Department of Music

Recording the Contemporary Pipe Organ in Baltimore

Since its 250 BCE invention, the pipe organ continues to develop, and accordingly composers continue to push the envelope of its expressive possibilities. In recent years, American builders have excelled in craftsmanship. Baltimore houses several noteworthy instruments that exemplify the design principles and tonal aesthetics currently in fashion. This presentation chronicles my recent recording project, which samples contemporary organ compositions from the past fifty years played on local instruments, demonstrating advances both in performing techniques as well as in organ construction.

The presentation will take place on Friday, 4/24 in CA 3080 starting at 3:00.
