Please make note of a subtle change in the procedures of the Academic Integrity Policy, should you need to respond to a situation that involves an academic integrity violation.
In the past, when faculty have found students responsible for violating the Academic Integrity Policy, the Registrar’s Office was copied on the letter informing the student of that decision as well as the subsequent penalty associated. The Office of Student Conduct & Civility Education will now be the repository of records for Academic Integrity violations along with all other student misconduct.
If a faculty member finds a student responsible for violating the Academic Integrity Policy, s/he should send a copy of the student’s notification letter to studentconduct@towson.edu or via campus mail to Student Conduct & Civility Education, Administration Building room 236, so that we may accurately record the violation. Faculty are encouraged to send all relevant materials, including a copy of the letter given to the student that notifies them of the violation, the academic penalty assigned, and copies of all academic documents related to the incident (text/quiz, paper, publication that was plagiarized, etc.).
In addition, we will be offering an educational seminar to some students who are found responsible for academic dishonesty. This will occur after the first violation and students will be expected to complete this to hopefully enhance their understanding of the importance of academic integrity in higher education, and how to adhere to the University’s expectations. We hope that this will help students become more familiar with expectations regarding academic honesty and to prevent recidivism.
All other procedures involved in the Academic Integrity Policy will remain the same. You can refer to the details of the policy on our website, or by clicking here.
More information regarding Academic Integrity will be discussed at our Faculty Lunch & Learn Series on October 24th from noon to 1:00pm in PY 312. Please RSVP to studentconduct@towson.edu if you would like to attend.
As always, if you encounter situations of academic misconduct or disruptive behavior in your class, please feel free to contact our office for consultation on the process. We also have template letters that you may use when working with students in this capacity. We look forward to working with you in the coming year.
Best of luck on the start of a new semester!
