Benefits Bulletin: Contract Renewals and Group Insurance Benefits

Direct pay employees (contingent staff, lecturers and part-time faculty) who are currently enrolled and paying for group insurance benefits through the State of MD are reminded that those benefits are active only through the end of their current contract period as printed on their coupons.

Direct pay employees who want to continue their current State benefits after the end of their current contract period must have their department head/chair send a brief statement listing their name, Social Security number and new contract dates to either Gail Price or Dave Curtis in Towson University?s Office of Human Resources Benefits Unit via e-mail or through campus mail.

If the exact dates of the new contract period are not yet confirmed, the statement should indicate that the department intends to offer a new contract and include the expected dates of the new contract period. That information will then be forwarded to the MD State Department of Budget and Management – Employee Benefits Division (DBM-EBD) as soon as possible so that new payment coupons can be produced and sent to the direct pay employee.

PLEASE NOTE: This procedure must be followed in order to obtain new payment coupons for continuation of State of MD or USM benefits with Unum as of July 2006, regardless of any other reporting that has been completed to renew the employment contracts for contingent staff members.
