Towson University personnel, both procurement cardholders and those without procurement cards, have been receiving e-mails with the subject line: VISA Account Security Measures Notification. A large display claims “Verified by VISA.” The message proceeds to tell recipients that their VISA accounts will be suspended if they do not reply.
THIS MESSAGE IS A SCAM. Visa and US Bank do not have your e-mail address. Do not reply and do not open the attachments. To do so may subject your account to fraudulent activity.
E-mail scams such as this are known as phishing. The e-mail appears to be from a genuine and legitimate source, such as a credit card company or bank, requesting that you update your account by providing information such as your password or social security number. They require that you log into their Web site. In reality, the Web site is fake and is set up to steal your information.
The Office of Technology Services is aware of the situation and is working to solve the problem to help ensure that your e-mail is safe from future attacks.
