Gender, Religion, Sexuality and Violence: The Case of the War in Iraq -This Lecture Is Intended For Faculty & Staff Only

Women’s History Month

On March 8, 2005 at 12: 30 pm in the University Union, Rooms 309-310, Dr. Janet Jakobsen will be presenting a talk entitled, “Gender, Religion, Sexuality and Violence: The Case of the War in Iraq.” This talk considers how these controversial issues come together in the conduct of the current U.S. war in Iraq. Dr. Jakobsen explores the way religion, gender, and sexuality are not just side issues, but are integral to legitimating the violence in Iraq. In particular, understanding the concept of “freedom” in light of its religious genealogy and its implication in gender and sexuality can help to explain the particular forms that this violence has taken, including the abuse of Iraqi prisoners at Abu Ghraib. Lunch will be provided. Please RSVP to {amwhitsel@towson.edu} by Monday, February 28, 2005.

Sponsored by The Institute for Teaching and Research on Women (ITROW) and the Department of Women’s Studies
