The Maryland International Education Association (MIEA) will hold its annual meeting in the CALVERT ROOM, THE STATE HOUSE, ANNAPOLIS, on FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 14TH. The keynote speaker is Maryland Secretary of State, Karl Aumann, who will address the issue of “Preparing Marylanders for the Global Marketplace”. A panel discussion will follow, consisting of Peter O’Neill, Director of the Maryland Office of International Trade; Jean Van Buskirk, Former Director, Maryland Sister State Program; and Peter Gourlay, vice President for Business Development, World Trade Center Institute. The MIEA will also announce the recipients of the state’s Study Abroad Scholarships for the spring 2004 semester.
The Maryland International Education Association is a consortium of all institutions of higher education in the state. Its purpose is to coordinate information and activities related to international education, and to promote cooperation and support for international programs. The MIEA was created out of the Maryland Celebrate 2000 Commission, which provided an initial grant of $100,000 for study abroad scholarships. This year’s meeting in Annapolis will focus on ways that higher education, government, and business can cooperate to develop a stronger international workforce for Maryland. All interested faculty and staff are encouraged to attend.
