Planning for Microsoft Office 2010

Microsoft’s next generation productivity suite, Office 2010 for Windows, was publicly released June 15, 2010. The Office of Technology Services (OTS) is working in collaboration with college and departmental IT service providers, lab managers, and other stakeholders to test the version and develop a campus upgrade plan. The plan will be available for review and comment after August 15 and will be announced through the Daily Digest and other channels. Until this plan is in place, we recommend that computers in offices, labs, and classrooms continue using Office 2007.

Individuals who want to use Office 2010 early can do so through the Virtual Workspace beginning July 30. Additionally, Office 2010 is available for faculty and staff at the University Store under the MEEC Work-At-Home Program. See {http://store.towson.edu} for additional information.

Office 2010 is not a radical change from the current campus standard (Office 2007), so we expect most people will be able to quickly and painlessly make the switch to the new version. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access all look and work just about the same as their Office 2007 predecessors. The good news is that Outlook gets some long-needed attention in the 2010 suite and will look and feel a lot more like other Office applications.

As always, OTS aims to facilitate a smooth transition to Office 2010, with minimal impact to teaching, learning and business processes. Further information will be posted in the Daily Digest as planning moves forward.
