Enrich student learning and receive The New York Times at HOME and for FREE

Teaching with…The New York Times

In the fall semester, professors at Towson used The New York Times to enrich their course currriculum in a variety of ways. This integration promoted civic engagement in the classroom as the paper was used to:
o Encourage critical thinking
o Promote global awareness
o Cultivate social responsibility
o Bring relevancy into the classroom
o Foster serendipitous learning

The University’s Civic Engagement Steering Committee sponsors this program and would like YOU to participate in the spring semester.

HOW DOES THE PROGRAM WORK?

There is not a prescribed method for using The New York Times to enrich student learning. While there are ideas available for ways to use The Times, faculty are able to incorporate the paper however they see fit.

Students will be able to pick up copies of The New York Times at several locations on campus including: the University Union, the Center for the Arts, Glen Dining Hall, Stephens Hall, Linthicum Hall, Van Bokkelen Hall, and the Media Center. Faculty members receive complimentary copies of The Times at HOME, Monday through Friday, to make preparation for class more convenient.

Additional Resources for the program include:

Free access to “TimesSelect” for students and faculty. This is a resource that allows access to award-winning Times columnists, articles running from 1851 onward, early access to Sunday articles, personalized e-mail alerts, and more.

NY Times College web site – Students and faculty can use this web site to connect to all of the resources NY Times reporters utilize through Newsroom Navigator. It also allows you to set up free e-mail alerts activated by subject and much more.

New York Times sponsored “Times Talk” sessions – The NY Times will sponsor and provide pizza for monthly lunch discussions of articles with students. Sessions are facilitated by a faculty member who can discuss an article of his/her choice. Look for opportunities to host a Times Talk session this semester.

New York Times Speaker – On Wednesday, March 7, 2007, Richard Berke, an Assistant Managing Editor for the NYT and former Washington editor responsible for covering Capitol Hill, will be speaking at Towson University. Mr. Berke will meet with classes prior to addressing the campus, with courses using The Times having first priority.
