Teaching with the NY Times Spring 2008 Program

For the past three semesters Towson University has partnered with the New York Times in the ?Teaching with the New York Times? readership program. This past fall over 60 faculty members incorporated the newspaper into more than 100 course curriculums at TU.

This integration promotes civic engagement as the paper is used to:
Encourage critical thinking
Promote global awareness
Cultivate social responsibility
Bring relevancy into the classroom
Foster serendipitous learning

HOW DOES THE PROGRAM WORK?

There is not a prescribed method for using The New York Times to enrich student learning. Professors determine how best to incorporate the newspaper with their courses.

Students are able to pick up copies of The New York Times at several locations on campus including: the University Union, Center for the Arts, Glen Dining Hall, Stephens Hall, Psychology Building/Hawkins Hall, Linthicum Hall, Van Bokkelen Hall, and the Media Center. Faculty members receive COMPLIMENTARY copies of The Times at HOME, Monday through Friday, to make preparation for class more convenient.

Additional Resources/Benefits of the program include:

Free access to ?TimesSelect?
NY Times College web site
New York Times sponsored ?Times Talk? sessions
New York Times Speakers
