“Teaching with the New York Times” Opportunity for Fall 2007

TEACHING WITH THE NEW YORK TIMES
See why faculty members from across the campus have been participating in the “Teaching with The New York Times” program this past year. “Teaching with the New York Times” is a partnership between the American Democracy Project, the New York Times, and institutions of higher education across the country.

Professors have used The New York Times to enrich their course curriculum in a variety of ways – there is not a single prescribed method, allowing for creativity in integrating the newspaper into your course in meaningful ways. This integration promotes civic engagement as the paper is used to:

Encourage critical thinking
Promote global awareness
Cultivate social responsibility
Bring relevancy into the classroom
Foster serendipitous learning

HOW DOES THE PROGRAM WORK?

Students are able to pick up copies of The New York Times at several locations across campus. Faculty members receive complimentary copies of The Times at HOME, Monday through Friday, to make preparation for class more convenient. Professors choose the best manner in which to include the newspaper as a course supplement.

Additional Resources/Benefits of the program include:

Free access to ?TimesSelect? for students and faculty; use of the NY Times College web site; voluntary participation in monthly New York “Times Talk” Lunches; and information about visiting New York Times speakers.
