Thomas M. Leitch Lecture on “Literacy and Visual Literacy,” November 18

Thomas M. Leitch, Professor of English and Director of Film Studies at the University of Delaware, will present the William Horne Memorial Lecture at 3:30 PM on November 18th in Van Bokkelen 213. Professor Leitch?s topic is ?From Literacy to Visual Literacy and Back Again.? What does it mean to be literate? Professor Leitch will explore how literacy means something different depending on whether one is talking about print, cinema, comic books, painting, ballet, etc. He will also discuss the many possible modalities of literacy within a specific medium.

Professor Leitch is a well-known scholar with a special interest in film adaptations of literature. He is the author of several books, most recently Adaptation Study and its Discontents (Johns Hopkins University Press, 2007).

The William Horne Memorial Lecture Series honors a Towson University faculty member who had very broad interests in literature, film, television, journalism, technology, and politics. This year?s topic is a good match with Professor Horne?s interdisciplinary curiosity.

Tom Leitch?s lecture is co-sponsored by the Department of Electronic Media and Film and the Cultural Studies Program. The lecture is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Peter Lev, {lev@towson.edu} or 4-3189.
