Teaching @ Towson: The Human Classroom – Facilitating a Community of Learners
Date: Friday April 2, 2010
Time: Noon ? 1:30 p.m.
Location: Cook 507 (The Towson Room)
Presented by: Diane Smith-Sadak, Associate Professor of Acting and Directing and
Barry K. Smith, Associate Adjunct Professor of Cultural Studies and Directing
Description: ?To teach is to create a space in which the community of Truth is practiced.? This quote by the internationally known educator Parker Palmer, author of ?The Courage to Teach,? provides a solid foundation upon which to build the human classroom. The paradox of Palmer?s pedagogy suggests that it takes more courage to create a learning space than it does to shape a course syllabus. It asks that teachers trust and believe in the potential of students ? that in creating a circle of trust and respect, rigor and commitment, openness and honesty, a community of learners can achieve a more integrated, worthwhile and lasting education. Theatre provides a unique role model for achieving such goals. Inherent in the actor?s preparation of a role, from page to stage, is a concrete and specific practice that can be integrated by any teachers in any classroom and any subject regardless of the age of the learners. During this hands-on workshop provides specific ways to achieve a more open space for learning ? a more human classroom.
