Paywall: The Business of Scholarship

Join us for a group viewing of this recently released documentary from Jason Schmitt, Associate Professor of Communication & Media at Clarkson University. The film provides insights into the highly lucrative scholarly communication industry and features interviews with key open access (OA) advocates. Reviews have appeared in Inside Higher Ed, Nature, and Science. After the screening, we’ll discuss how Cook Library can help TU faculty increase the reach and impact of their published scholarship by posting it in our open access institutional repository, ScholarWorks@Towson.

“Open Access: How Accessible Is It?”

Lisa Macklin, Director of Research, Engagement, and Scholarly Communications for Emory University Libraries, gave this recorded presentation at NASIG’s 33rd Annual Conference in June 2018. She celebrates the successes of the OA movement to date, outlines challenges yet to be overcome, and argues that we should expand our conception of OA to include accessibility more broadly. After viewing the presentation, we’ll discuss ways we can all promote equity of access to scholarship here on campus.

“Open Data Repositories: Creating Equitable and Sustainable Data Access”

This live webcast from the Association of College & Research Libraries will review the current landscape of open data repositories, discussing how repositories present opportunities and threats to equitable and sustainable access to research data. The presenters will also discuss best practices established by DataONE, an NSF-funded network of repositories of earth sciences data.
