Dr. Charles Schmitz, Professor in the Department of Geography and Environmental Planning in the College of Liberal Arts, will present his sabbatical talk entitled “Salafis in Yemen” on Friday, November 17, at 3:00pm in the College of Liberal Arts building, room 2310.
Since the war in Yemen began in early 2015, Salafis led the popular militias that defended Aden and took leading positions in the Saudi-backed government of Hadi. What is Salafism, who are the Salafis, and what does their new prominence mean for Yemen’s future?
