Carbon Reduction Instructions for faculty and staff

Summer break is the perfect time to SAVE ENERGY and the ENVIRONMENT by reducing our Carbon Footprint!

Energy usage represents 54 percent of the campus’ carbon emissions.  We’ll be doing our part to conserve by setting back temperature in buildings to reduce energy use from cooling. Here is what you can do over summer break:

  • POWER OFF all monitors and printers, and log out of all computers. If you plan to use Remote Desktop over the break, you will need to leave your PC on and change the setting for “Put the computer to sleep” to NEVER, under Power Options in Control Panel.
  • UNPLUG cell phones chargers, coffee makers, printers, TVs, stereos and other electrical devices from the wall.  Plugged in devices use power even when they are not turned on.
  • Turn off the lights.
  • Lock doors and windows.
  • Close window blinds in your office or lab during the hottest part of the day to keep temperatures lower inside.
  • Vent hoods should be turned off or fully closed except when they are in use for experiments or material storage purposes.

Visit our EcoScreens  to learn more about energy usage on campus.  Contact the Office of Sustainability if you’d like to get involved.
