Exploring Learning Analytics
February 27 – March 5, 2017 New technologies can enable faculty and administrators to gather data about how students are interacting with digital learning environments, such as the campus LMS. This data can be used to inform the future design of courses, platforms and even the development of predictive tools that can guide individual students towards success. However, the understanding of a practical approach for educators is often missing. During this one-week workshop, we will learn about the fundamental concepts and approaches used in this quickly evolving field. Designed with the practitioner in mind, this applied analytics workshop will include examples of learning analytics approaches and projects happening within higher education as well as highlight methods of building capacity towards an analytics project or strategy. Learning Objectives: · Define the standard data points collected both in-class and at a wider institution and program perspective. · Identify the similarities and differences between learning analytics, academic analytics, and educational data mining. · Demonstrate learning analytics general examples, including uses to improve engagement, early warning alerts and other methods of “in-semester” practical uses. |

Expectations for OLC Workshops: Most OLC workshops are asynchronous, and facilitated. You don’t need to be at your computer at a specific time, but there are deadlines throughout the week for various assignments. OLC staff describes workshop expectations this way, “For all of our workshops, we suggest that participants devote at least one hour each day to read materials, post to the forums, and complete graded assignments…To receive an Award of Completion, participants must complete the graded assignments by the due date set.” Some OLC workshops are offered synchronously. Read the descriptions to determine the workshop format.
