#WhenIFellnLoveWithMyself: A Discussion of Black Women’s Mental Health and Well-being and the Saving Our Sisters Project

Multiculturalism in Action Brown Bag Series

Wednesday, February 15, 12:00 to 1:15pm, College of Liberal Arts building room 4150

This Multiculturalism in Action Brown Bag Series workshop will be presented by Dr. Jameta Barlow, Department of Women’s and Gender Studies.  African American women and other Black women in the African Diaspora have been understudied, underserved, and misdiagnosed for depression. Only 12 percent of African American females seek help or treatment; yet researchers suggest estimated rates of depression are 35 percent. This interactive and lively discussion will highlight a current research study, the Saving Our Sisters Project, to focus on the resistance and reinforcement of structures of gender and race as central to a discussion on identity politics and intersectionality in behavior and health services research. Light refreshments will be provided.
