The Office of Technology Services (OTS) will automatically update all Towson-owned computers to Java 8 on July 6, 2016. All old versions of Java (7 and older) will be removed for security purposes. Oracle, the developer of Java, highly recommends this as a standard practice because older versions or multiple versions of Java on a computer presents serious security risks. Having the latest version of Java installed ensures that Java applications will run with the latest security and performance improvements on your computer.
If you have an application or use a Web page that requires an older version of Java, upgrade the application or contact the provider and request that they update the application to be compatible with all versions of Java. In the meantime, if you need to run an older version of Java, submit a TechHelp service request to ask for an exception by July 1, 2016 using request type: Employee Role > Software, Apps, and Operating Systems > General Question.
For additional information, see the Upgrade of Java 8 and Uninstall of Java 7 and Older at Towson FAQs.
