As many of you know, Eric Belgrad passed away on September 1. Dr. Belgrad was an essential part of the Towson community for 50 years. During his tenure, he taught a wide range of subjects, from international relations and Soviet foreign policy to ancient and modern political theory. His scholarly contributions ran a wide gamut from the jurisprudence of Chief Justice John Marshall to the politics of international humanitarian aid. He, along with the late Pete Merani, founded the Towson University Journal of International Affairs, one of the oldest student-edited journals of international affairs in the country. He was a principal founder of the International Studies Program, which remains a thriving curriculum. He served as the chairperson of the Political Science Department for nearly two decades. During his time as chair, he also served as the co-chair of the University’s Council of Chairpersons and he served on countless college and university committees. In 2007 he was given the President’s Award for Distinguished Service to the University. Dr. Belgrad was deeply committed to teaching, to mentoring colleagues, and to ensuring the continuing integrity and success of his department, college, and university.
