Facilitating Group Work Online

November 13 – 20

Group work poses challenges for faculty and students for a number of reasons, including lack of online technology skills, time conflicts, differences in team member participation, as well as logistics such as design and student satisfaction with group work activities. In this workshop you will learn how to address those challenges by participating in a collaborative group work activity. During the activity you will experience effective group work processes and develop a group work activity for use in your teaching.

Learning Objectives

·         Evaluate models and processes that support effective group work

·         Develop a group work activity

Expectations for OLC Workshops: Most OLC workshops are asynchronous, and facilitated. You don’t need to be at your computer at a specific time, but there are deadlines throughout the week for various assignments.   OLC staff describes workshop expectations this way, “For all of our workshops, we suggest that participants devote at least one hour each day to read materials, post to the forums, and complete graded assignments…To receive an Award of Completion, participants must complete the graded assignments by the due date set.” Some OLC workshops are offered synchronously. Read the descriptions to determine the workshop format.

The Office of Academic Innovation sponsors Towson’s membership to the Online Learning Consortium.
