TU Brings Girls Who Code to The College of Education!

The Education Innovation Lab in the College of Education announced today the launch of a new Girls Who Code Club, a community-based affiliate of the national non-profit organization Girls Who Code, which seeks to inspire, educate, and equip girls with the computing skills to pursue 21st century opportunities.

The Education Innovation Lab is thrilled to be a part of the Girls Who Code Club programs, which have already reached upwards of 3,100 girls, bringing high-quality computer science education to girls in grades 6-12 nationwide.

Towson University’s Girls Who Code Club will begin this summer, Mondays and Wednesdays, the week of July 13, 2015. If you know of a young lady between 6th and 12th grade who would like to learn more, please contact The Education Innovation Lab at coe110@towson.edu or call us at 410-704-2782.

By 2020, there will be 1.4 million jobs open in the computing related fields, but the United States is only on pace to filling 29% of them with computer science graduates. At current rates only 3% will be filled by women. Girls Who Code and its community partners nationwide are seeking to change that.

The Girls Who Code Clubs program offers a fun, project-based curriculum covering topics like artificial intelligence, graphics, game design, cryptography, and mobile development. Clubs are lead by a mix of tech industry professionals, computer science teachers, and college students, all trained in Girls Who Code’s innovative curriculum and philosophy.

“Since founding Girls Who Code in 2012, it’s been my dream to democratize access to computer science education for girls across the country,” said Reshma Saujani, founder and CEO of Girls Who Code. “Thanks to the dedicated community partners, volunteer instructors, school leaders, librarians, parents, and girls who have stepped up to launch Girls Who Code Clubs, that’s exactly what we’ve done today.”

Girls Who Code first piloted Clubs in 2013 following the success of the organization’s intensive 7-week Summer Immersion Program, with the aim of bringing high-quality computer science education to more girls in more cities across the US.
