Date/Time: Friday, April 10/3:00 to 4:00pm
Place: College of Liberal Arts, Room 3310
The Department of Geography and Environmental Planning invites you to hear the presentation by Dr. Paul McDaniel, a Research Fellow at the American Immigration Council in Washington, DC, on “Welcoming City Initiatives: Pursuing Immigration Integration.” Across much of the United States, immigrants have contributed to economic growth or have helped ward off decline. As a result, a growing number of cities are developing “immigrant-friendly” and “welcoming city” initiatives. In some places, such initiatives are simply part of economic development; while in others, they are part of a comprehensive approach to immigrant integration. Dr. McDaniel looks at programs in Chicago, Dayton, and Nashville to demonstrate how immigrant experience varies widely across different areas of even “welcoming” cities. As a result, cities that pursue such strategies need to consider the process of welcome and immigrant settlement across their entire areas.
