America Counts, an initiative of the Mathematics Department, is inviting volunteers or Federal Work Study students to tutor Baltimore City and Baltimore County middle school students 1:1 in basic math. We have opportunities at 5 middle schools and a facility of the Department of Juvenile Services. Students who have done this in the past describe it as a ?win-win.? The middle school kids love you, learn math, look up to you?and you have a feeling of accomplishment and awareness.
You don?t need to be a math whiz; successful completion of a University level math course or an adequate math SAT score (500) is all that is needed?along with lots of enthusiasm and a commitment to tutor several hours once a week for the rest of the semester. You need to be dependable and responsible. The kids love you, look up to you and learn math?and the university really appreciates what you do.
Orientation and training will be held in room 106 at 7800 York Road on Saturday February 7, 2009 from 9:00 until 2:00. Breakfast and lunch will be provided, school sign ups will take place and car pools arranged. Tutoring can take place any school day between 8:00 and 7:30. You choose your hours.
