Tips for Walking on Ice and Snow

Slips and falls on ice are a leading cause of winter workplace injury. No matter how well the snow and ice are removed from parking lots or sidewalks, you may still encounter some slippery surfaces.

Below are tips to remember when walking in cold temperatures:
? Walk with caution and assume that all wet, dark areas on pavements are slippery and icy.
? Use special care when entering and exiting vehicles; use the vehicle for support if necessary.
? Look ahead when you walk; a snow- or ice-covered sidewalk or driveway, especially if on a hill, may require travel along its grassy edge for traction.
? When walking on ice or snow, point your feet out slightly like a penguin. Spreading your feet out increases your center of gravity.
? Keep your hands out of your pockets and extend your arms out to your sides to maintain balance.
? Watch where you are stepping and remember to walk slowly.
? Take short steps or shuffle for stability.
