The Pedagogy of Service-Learning: How to make an Impact in the Community

Featuring Guest Speaker, Dr. Richard Riegelman, Founding Dean of the School of Public Health and Health Services at George Washington University.
Dr. Richard Riegelman began his career at GW as a resident in internal medicine. He joined the medical school faculty two years later and since then has dedicated himself to practicing medicine and improving public health through research, teaching and founding the School of Public Health and Health Services at George Washington University. Dr. Riegelman is a recipient of the Association of Schools of Public Health Pfizer Award for Teaching Excellence, which recognized his service and achievements in cultivating the public health leaders of the future.
Dr. Riegelman has extensive experience using service-learning teaching pedagogies to enhance student learning and to positively impact communities. Dr. Riegelman will draw upon his experiences practicing and teaching in the public health sector to facilitate an interactive discussion about service-learning in general.
Topics will include:
? What students should expect from a service-learning experience
? The relationship between service-learning and career development
? The importance of reflection in connecting students to larger and underlying social issues
